Cookie policy

Last updated: 30 October 2026

The short version: NeatPencil’s own pages set no cookies. We use Google Analytics to count visits. Until you choose, it only counts page visits, without cookies. Accepting lets it use cookies too, and rejecting turns it off for you. This page lists everything the site keeps in your browser, and how to change your choice.

What cookies are

Cookies are small text files a website asks your browser to keep, and to send back each time you visit. Browsers also have two similar stores, called session storage and local storage, that a page can use without sending anything back to the website.

Google Analytics

A small banner at the bottom of the page asks for your choice, with equal Accept and Reject buttons. No cookie is set unless you accept.

  • Before you choose, Google Analytics only counts page visits, without cookies. Each page view is sent to Google with no cookie or identifier, so nothing on your device lets it link your visits together.
  • If you accept, Google Analytics also sets two cookies on neatpencil.com, so we can see how pages are used over repeat visits: _ga, which tells it when the same browser comes back, and _ga_ followed by our property code, which keeps track of the current visit. Both expire after 13 months.
  • If you reject, Google Analytics is turned off for you: nothing from Google loads on the pages you visit after that, and any Google Analytics cookies are deleted.

Google signals and ad personalisation are switched off, and the data is never used for advertising. The names you type are never sent to Google. Our privacy policy explains what Google receives and how long it’s kept.

What else we keep in your browser

  • Your cookie choice is kept in local storage so the banner doesn’t ask on every page. After 12 months we ask again. It’s needed to remember your answer, so it doesn’t itself need consent.
  • The names or words you type, and the worksheet options you choose, are kept in session storage, so the preview page can lay out the worksheets you asked for and the form remembers your choices if you go back to change something. They’re cleared when you close the browser tab.
  • Your region (United States, Australia, New Zealand or United Kingdom) is kept in local storage if you choose one at the top or bottom of the page, so the site points you to your own school styles next time. It stays until you clear it in your browser.

None of these is ever sent to our server or to anyone else. The names you type stay on your device: they are not uploaded, stored by us or put in a web address. If you haven’t chosen a region, the site makes a guess from your device’s time zone, on your device, and saves nothing.

Changing your choice

Use “Cookie settings” at the bottom of any page to accept or reject analytics cookies at any time. Closing the tab clears session storage. To clear everything else, use your browser’s settings to clear site data for neatpencil.com; most browsers keep this under Privacy or Site settings.

Cookies for our own team

WordPress, which runs the site, sets sign-in cookies when a member of our team logs in to edit pages. Visitors never need to sign in, so you won’t receive these, and signed-in team members are never counted by Google Analytics.

Advertising in the future

NeatPencil is free, and we plan to pay for it with display advertising from Google AdSense. Advertising tools use cookies too. Before any ads go live we will update this page and our privacy policy to list them, and Google’s own consent message will ask visitors in the UK, the European Economic Area and Switzerland first. Ads will never see the names you type.
